Record Numbers Enroll in Independent Science Research
Antanina Zmuidzinas, Ph.D., Science Research Coordinator

Scientific discovery is alive and thriving within the labs, petri dishes, PCR machines, computers, cerebrums and extraterrestrial space of Saint Ann’s. This year over 30 high school students (record number!) have embarked on personal journeys of science exploration. The Independent Science Research Program grants students the opportunity to design strategies to answer personally perplexing questions of science: What would happen if...? Why is it that...? Why do people smell? type of questions.

Research questions are as unique and varied as the investigator population. This year’s projects include the physics of gyroballs, submarine construction, the link between female hormones and urinary tract infections, pheromones, the genetics of Asian flush, addiction and drug rehabilitation, cancer, the power of suggestion, Quantum Physics meets Eastern Philosophy, extraterrestrial life, the link between folklore and genetic diseases, antibiotic resistance, mutation rates, Toxoplasmosis, chemical synthesis and much much more. Research students become well acquainted with diverse lab subjects including Saccharomyces cervisea (yeast), Caenorhabditis elegans (nematodes), Dugesia tigrina (flat worms), Escherichia coli (bacteria), Homo sapiens (perplexing) and yet unclassified extraterrestrial life forms.

Independent Science Research is a cooperative research endeavor between a student or several students and a chosen mentor. Saint Ann’s science teachers, as well as outside research investigators, serve as advisors. One senior mentors a 5th grade researcher on their joint venture to illuminate black holes.

After completing a year of research, students summarize their projects in a formal paper. In the spring, discoveries are made public though a poster and oral symposium. The Independent Science Research Program is strengthened by attending seminars, visiting outside science facilities, as well as matching students with professionals working in research facilities. We invite you to learn more about— and to collaborate with us on—our journey of scientific exploration.

Heifer International: a Fourth and Fifth Grade Project

The fourth and fifth graders spent the month of October raising money for Heifer International. This organization donates animals (sheep, heifers, goats, pigs, chickens, water buffalo, etc.) to impoverished families around the world. The animals create the opportunity for self-reliance by providing a sustainable source of food and income for the recipient families. Each student was asked to earn one dollar. Some earned their money by babysitting or doing chores at home; some held bake sales on their stoops; some sold their comic books; and one choreographed a dance for her mother.

Small groups of students made posters and some were brave enough to go to the other assemblies at school to announce the project. Each group that went to the high school has received a rousing round of applause. The last day for collection of donations was October 27th. We thank all students and parents who helped make this project so successful.
