Calendar for December

Upcoming Events:

First Monday Concerts

Pandit Samir Chatterjee, Tabla (Indian hand drums), and Sanghamitra Chatterjee, vocalist, will join us at our First Monday Concert on December 5 in the Ettl Lobby at 6pm. James Busby, Chair of the Music Department, says, “These are special artists representing the Hindustani (North Indian) classical music tradition. This is a rare opportunity to hear one hour of exquisite music presented by world class artists. We encourage everyone, including our youngest audience members, to attend.”

Pandit Chatterjee has performed in festivals as a soloist and with other outstanding musicians from both Indian and Western traditions. He can be heard on numerous recordings. In concert he has accompanied many of India’s greatest musicians including Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Kahn, and Bhimsen Joshi. A member of the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music, he has become a catalyst in the fusion of Indian and Western music, performing with Pauline Oliveros, Ravi Coltrane, the Dance Theater of Harlem, Boston Musica Viva and other jazz and avant-garde musicians.

Gifted with a sweet and melodious voice, Sanghamitra Chatterjee is one of the leading vocalists of India in the fields of light and light classical music. She has performed as an individual as well as a group musician with Chhandayan, the Battery Dance Company of New York, and Kathak Ensemble of New York and at distinguished venues, including the Smithsonian Institute, Columbia University, and the American Museum of Natural History. She is also featured in a CD with Jerry Garcia as the guest artist.

Elephants Can Paint Too!

Everyone is invited to celebrate the publication of Katya Arnold’s latest book Elephants Can Paint Too! on Thursday, December 8 in the Ettl Lobby from 6:00 - 8:00pm. Saint Ann’s students participated in the creation of this book. At 6:30pm, Katya will give a lively talk, accompanied by slides and video, about her experiences teaching art to both elephants and Saint Ann’s students. A reception with book signing and an art exhibition will follow. The sale of Katya’s books and original art will benefit the Saint Ann’s School Scholarship Fund.

Katya has taught at Saint Ann’s for twenty years and is the author of sixteen books. Elephants Can Paint Too! has been selected by the New York Public Library for their 100 Titles For Reading And Sharing 2005 list. Each year, the NYPL creates this list to celebrate what they see as the best achievements in children's publishing from picture books through teen novels.

Saint Francis College Lecture Series

Saint Francis College invited our high school students to be guests at their lecture series this fall. On November 16, the 9th grade attended a lecture by Paul Rusesabagina, the real-life hero of Hotel Rwanda. On October 25, American history students heard a talk by the families of three civil rights workers slain in the summer of 1964: James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner.

The Fun Run, October 30, 2005

This year over one hundred runners passed the finish line in Prospect Park. They and their families gathered afterwards for refreshments. Many thanks to the Recreational Arts Department for sponsoring the run and to Peter Moser for designing and producing this year’s long-sleeved t-shirt, which said “Fun Run” in 8 different languages.
