153 Pierrepont: A Brief Explanation

by Gabrielle Howard, Head of the Lower School

In the beginning it was all about light. A primary goal was to maximize light, and in a way, this drove the design. There are windows in all of the classrooms, and a number are simply flooded with natural light.

The interior square hallway spaces are intended to be used as an extension of the classrooms on each floor. The pattern of the linoleum provides a visible link between the interior core and the exterior spaces. This interior square core is not parallel to the front of the building but placed at an angle creating quirky spaces in all of the classrooms. As you enter a floor this makes the building feel bigger than it actually is. Many rooms have columns in them adding to the idiosyncrasy of the space. Dividers allow seperation for reading groups and math classes. In addition to the classrooms on each floor there is a fourth room either for music, for art, the nurse's office or the Lower School Office.

We are a school built on reading and literature; the library situated on the right as you enter the building honors this love. And the "wiggle" wall opposite is in celebration of all the kids who wiggle their way through Saint Ann's Lower School.

Downstairs is the dining room / performance space. The uneven floor here turned into a blessing when it became a stage area; we can actually remove part of the railing for performances. And the brick arches have a drama all their own.

The gym on the sixth floor speaks for itself.

All we really need to do now is to fill this dream with our children. It is their building!
