Poem of the Day: 26 Sep 2008

On Leave

yesterday I saw a man catching
flying fish
hooking them on
suspended traps of bait
they wrinkle
their bodies
their eyes lash mine

I place garlands
on graves
of people I didn’t know
rub ash into my forehead
to rid myself
of slackened bodies

after I have walked all around
I sit in the park
drink beer
think of the fish
drawn to food on invisible string
like people
who can’t get off the ground
