About The Lower School Library Collection

The Lower School Library’s collection contains approximately 15,000 volumes, and is continually updated and expanded. The collection consists of picture books, I-can-read level books, beginning chapter books, children’s fiction, folklore and fairy tales, poetry, and non-fiction books (including extensive reference collections, biographies, sports, art, music and architecture). The books are organized so that the children are able to browse with increasing independency as they become familiar with the library’s layout and collection, and as their reading levels change. The fiction collection is color-coded in order to assist in this goal.
Fiction Collection:

RED LABELS indicate picture books, a genre in which the illustrations are central to the story. These books range from simple ones for the very young to sophisticated stories including legends and fairy tales. They are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name.

YELLOW-GREEN LABELS indicate the I-can-read beginning reader books with the fewest words to a page and highly controlled vocabularies (such as the Biscuit series by A. Capucilli).

GREEN LABEL books have more words to a page and offer the advancing reader a more extensive word choice and more complex stories (such as the Henry and Mudge books by Cynthia Rylant). They are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.

BLUE-GREEN LABELS identify beginning chapter books. Short to moderate in length, these books are designed to introduce the younger reader to the world of juvenile fiction (a.k.a. chapter books!). Examples of these are The Time Warp Trio books by Jon Sciezska, and The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne.

BLUE LABEL books are juvenile fiction, and range in scope from shorter, yet more sophisticated chapter books to novels for older children. They are all shelved by the author’s last name.

MYSTERIES
of all reading levels are shelved together at the end of the juvenile fiction books. They are generally not color-coded, and are identified by their call letters MYST and the first 3 letters of the author's last name.

Non-Fiction Collection:

Non-fiction books are not color coded, but are arranged by the Dewey decimal number. (Folktales and fairy tales (398.2) that are not picture books are included in this section). The sports section is comprised of both sports fiction (such as the Matt Christopher or Dan Gutman books) and non-fiction, because it simplifies the selection process for the children.
