Saint Ann's Lower School Library

The lower school library is located on the ground floor of the Hill Farber building. It is a bright space with two walls of windows, a cozy “reading house” and a story loft for whole class story time. The children in first through third grades participate in two regularly scheduled library periods each week. One visit is a time to listen as a librarian reads aloud a series of stories or an ongoing chapter book to the class. The other is an opportunity to select books to take home for the week. Kindergartners are read to in their classrooms by the librarians, but also visit the library each week to choose books. The library’s resources are also available to faculty and staff, who draw from the collection to augment classroom libraries and to enhance curriculum studies.
The goal of “book pick-out” is to allow the children to develop their love of reading and independence in a library setting by choosing books that interest them. Each child selects two books to take home each week. One of these should be at the child’s independent reading level, and the librarians help the children make selections appropriate to them. The other selection can be any book in the library. Some children like to take two “reading “ books, some choose a more challenging book for their parents to read aloud to them, and others prefer to select books on topics of particular interest, from animals to outer space. The children are encouraged to explore all the book genres that are available.
