ARTS

Our arts program offers interested students the chance for more concentrated involvement in the arts.

Choice of Activities

We offer Arts & Crafts, Drama, and Computers. Students choose up to two activities on which to concentrate for at least one week of the session. This focus allows the students time to immerse themselves in their projects, whether in visual arts, stage performance, computing skills, or any combination of these. All activities will be calibrated to challenge skill levels from beginner to advanced.

Daily Routine

Two counselors for each activity will meet students in the main building and take them to the appropriate space. Each day's two activity periods will be separated by a 45 minute break for snacks, story reading, singing or free time. Lunch is at 12 PM, followed by free time in the park and swimming. All students will take part in the Friday trip program.

SCIENCE

SCIENCE PROGRAM

Open to students entering grades five through seven, the Science Program gives students the opportunity to learn more about the natural world.  The program takes place during the first two weeks of the first session and will offer different topics each week.

This program is for students who love science and want ample time to pursue projects and topics that build further on our school year science curriculum.  We combine academic research, field work, and laboratory activities with relevant arts and crafts projects.

Science Program is two weeks long and students may sign up for either or both weeks.  Topics may include seed germination, chemistry of cooking, geology, and marine mammals.  Please note that due to planning needs registration for Science Program is May 1st.  If registration is inadequate by that date part or the entire program may be cancelled.

Daily Routine:

Mornings are devoted to laboratory activities and small-group research projects.  Students join the other students for lunch and playtime in the park from 12-1 PM, then return to the science classroom for subject-related games, puzzles, art projects, and films.

Staff

Sarah Richards and Liz Velikonja will jointly teach the Science Program

LIBRARY PROGRAM
   (June 13 – June 24)

Our Library Program is open to students entering fourth through eight grades.  The program will offer the students who love the library an opportunity to spend one or two weeks among books and visit museums and other places of interest to the book fan.

Read, Create, Draw, Explore!

Love the Library? This summer there will be two weeks of fun-filled library activities. Each week is different, but both will include games and outdoor time.

( June 13th - 17th )

Konnichiwa. Haven't convinced your parents to take you to Japan yet? Start your travels this summer in the library!

Library students will immerse themselves in the wonders of Japan's culture. Activities are likely to include a workshop in the art of rice papermaking as well as Japanese bookmaking and origami paper folding. We hope to participate in an Aikido workshop as well as learn about Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) and maybe even dabble in calligraphy! We are planning to visit the Japan society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. No study of Japan would be complete without some manga reading and drawing as well as some anime viewing! Library Program will run for two weeks; students are welcome to sign up for just one week.

Daily Routine
The students will gather in the library each day to embark on a new chapter of trips and in-house activities.  The Library Program does not join the other summer programs for afternoon swimming.

Please note that due to planning needs registration for Library Program is May 1st.
If registration is insufficient by that date the program will be cancelled.

The program is open to students entering sixth through ninth grades and will give students an opportunity to learn about and build electronic devices. This program offers two one-week electronic workshops in the computer center. While each week covers the same material, the second week may differ slightly depending on how many students enroll for both weeks. The class requires a minimum of 10 students and will be capped at 15. Register as soon as possible to reserve a spot. In order to allow as many participants as possible a student may only be able to participate for one week. This will, of course, depend on the level of interest.

Experiment, Build, Solder, Hack

Love electronics? Computer teacher, Liz Arum, will offer students an experience in soldering and building traditional, as well as soft, flexible and washable electronic circuits. Projects will include voodoo dolls, joule thieves, night lights, experimental electronic instruments and twitchies. Liz will be assisted by another adult staff member and high school counselors to help students with their projects.

Please note that due to planning needs registration for the Physical Computing Program must be completed by May 1st. If registration is insufficient by that date the program will be cancelled.

Daily Routine. The workshop will run from 9:00-3:00 pm. The students will gather in the computer center each day. During the lunch break, students may join other groups of the Summer Program. This program does not participate in afternoon swimming.
